The town of Ashington in Northumberland grew from a small settlement consisting of just a few farms as recently as the early 19th century, to become a large coal mining centre within 15 miles of Newcastle. The importance of coal mining in the development of Ashington is still evident in the streets of terraced dwellings in long 'Colliery' Rows. Ashington was once said to be "The largest mining village in the world", although there are no deep mines now. The Ashington Colliery was opened in 1867 and closed in 1988. Although a developed area, just outside of Ashington is lovely countryside and coastline; to the south of town is the River Wansbeck and the dramatic North Sea coast at Newbiggin-by-the-Sea is within three miles of Ashington town centre. The best place to explore the history of the town and its coal mining roots is at the local museum at Woodhorn pit. The museum has exhibits telling of the miners along with pictures and models.
Ashington is between countryside and coast and offers a broad choice of eateries, shops, amenities and pubs as well as lovely gardens and open spaces. Riverside Park by Wansback River offers a peaceful escape and scenic walks on public footpaths towards the quaint village of Bothal with its striking castle above the river. The People's Park and. Hirst Park too with its floral displays, offer recreation facilities in Ashington and at Woodhorn, is the fabulous Queen Elizabeth II Park with its large lake with a narrow gauge railway.
