The town of Banstead is set amidst the rolling countryside of the North Downs in the county of Surrey. Most of the area of Banstead Downs is a Site of Special Scientific Interest that is carefully managed by Natural England. Despite being on the border with Greater London, this area is rich with diverse wildlife, flora and fauna. Mention of a settlement in this picturesque area appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 when it is noted as having a church and mill; although the church we see today was built around the end of the 12th century. All Saints Church has a magnificent west window that was designed by Dante Gabriel Rossetti and produced by William Morris.
A prosperous town with tree-lined streets, Banstead’s town centre has good shopping on its long High Street that stretches from the war memorial at one end to the library at the other. The town has an excellent choice of restaurant and amenities as well as plenty of opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities, historic sites and attractions in the area. Places of interest here include the Tumble Beacon, a large mound of earth that once served to warn London of the arrival of the Spanish Armada along with a series of beacons and bonfires that stretched from the South Coast towards London. As one of the highest points on the southern Thames basin rim, the views across London and the countryside are spectacular.
