The village of Barrow-upon-Humber in the county of Lincolnshire is an historic place where many of the buildings date from the 18th and 19th century. Although the design of the central market place has changed somewhat, it can still be identified by its stock stones. Back in the more barbaric Middle Ages, local trouble-makers were tied to the stones as public punishment; evidence of the area where people were restrained is found on the south side where the stones are worn. Fascinating historic buildings to explore include Down Hall, Barrow Hall, Forester's Hall and West Cote Farm.
Barrow-upon-Humber is also associated with the man of such importance to the maritime industry, John Harrison 1693-1776. He created a way of establishing a ship’s longitude with the invention of the first marine chronometer, a clock designed to keep accurate time whilst at sea. The Harrison family moved here when John was a child. The port of Barrow Haven is still in use today and the river and clay pits that surround the area offer excellent nature reserves with an abundance of waterfowl. A host of outdoor activities are catered for, including horse riding, cycling, nature trails and walks.
