Elgin is a former cathedral city and Royal Burgh in the Scottish council area of Moray, in the far north of Scotland. It is the administrative and commercial centre for the area and is situated on higher ground by the River Lossie. It was here that in August of 1040, MacBeth's army defeated and killed Duncan I at neighbouring Bothganowan — a history that inspired the Shakespeare play Macbeth. Elgin was a regular place of residence to the early Scottish monarchs, including David I, William I, Alexander II, and Alexander III, all of whom held courts at the castle and hunted in the surrounding royal forests.
Popular attraction in the area include the Glen Grant Distillery and Garden, Elgin Museum, Elgin Cathedral, Spynie Palace, and Balvenie Castle.
