The town of Fakenham in the county of Norfolk lies on the River Wensum and although there is no date for the first settlers here, flint tools and weapons have been found that indicate a settlement during Neolithic times. The river and agriculture became important to the town and the Doomsday Book records in 1086 that there were three river-powered mills. By 1250, Fakenham’s market place held its first market and still holds a vibrant Farmers’ Market every month. The oldest building here dates from the 17th century and is found at the junction of Tunn and Swan Street. Another feature of Fakenham’s past that lingers today is the gas works. Built in 1845, the Fakenham Gas Museum tells the story of how gas was once responsible for lighting up the whole town.
Fakenham boasts a select group of shops, monthly market, good amenities, the history and heritage to be found at the Museum of Gas and Local History and a race course. The first race meeting at Fakenham Racecourse in 1905 on Easter Monday and was held annually and by 1926, a hurdle race was introduced.
