The former county town of Lanarkshire, Hamilton, is a town in the Scottish council area of South Lanarkshire, which is in the west-central Lowlands. It serves as the administrative centre for the area and is the fifth largest town in Scotland, after Paisley, East Kilbride, Livingston and Cumbernauld. It is situated in a scenic location at the confluence of the River Clyde and the Avon Water, just 12 miles away from the city of Glasgow.
The town is named after the Hamilton family, who, during the Wars of Scottish Independence, supported the English and governed Bothwell Castle on their behalf. However, they later changed loyalty in favour of Robert the Bruce, for which they were rewarded with the portion of land in which the town of Cadzow was located and later renamed as Hamilton.
The Hamilton Mausoleum, in Strathclyde Park (which is famed for having the longest echo of any building in the world) and Cadzow Castle, are relics of their long and illustrious history in the area. The Low Parks Museum, which is housed in a 16th century inn in the grounds where Hamilton Palace once stood, is also a very popular attraction in the town.
