The large town and port of Holyhead in Anglesey, Wales is a major crossing point for ferries serving Ireland as well as a popular tourist destination. Located on the picturesque Holy Island, archaeological evidence suggests that people have been sailing between Holyhead and Ireland for over 4,000 years. In the 19th century, a two and a half mile breakwater was constructed, creating a safe harbour for vessels caught in stormy waters on their way to Liverpool and other Lancashire ports. The rich maritime heritage is explored and exhibited at Holyhead's fascinating maritime museum.
The attractive town centre of Holyhead is built around St. Cybi's Church, which is built inside one of Europe's only three-walled Roman forts, Caer Gybi. This small fortlet at the centre of Holyhead is thought to be from the late 4th century and was set up to defend the west coast against Irish sea-raiders. Holyhead offers plenty of shops, amenities and a choice of eateries and pubs as well as an abundance of heritage sites, museums, galleries, visitor and cultural attractions, including the breathtaking cliff-top site of South Stack. With walks, a visitor centre, closed circuit TV to view nesting birds and in the summer, over 4,000 pairs of seabirds to watch, South Stack is an amazing place where you can see puffins, fulmars, guillemots and razorbills.
