The market town of New Milton in the county of Hampshire lies at the edge of the New Forest in an area rich in diverse wildlife, flora and fauna that is popular with walkers and outdoor enthusiasts. New Milton has grown to include the pretty coastal village of Barton-on-Sea as a suburb, offering visitors the best of coastal and inland adventures. This area truly prospered during the Victorian era, with the coming of the railways and the opening of New Milton railway station in 1888 that brought trade opportunities as well as visitors.
New Milton and Barton-on-Sea offer ample amenities and shops as well as a good choice of eateries and pubs along with visitor attractions and beautiful places to visit in the surrounding area. Buildings and sites or architectural and historic interest here include the striking Tudor style water tower of unusual colour that was built in 1900 in Osborne Road and the distinctive row of Coast Guard Cottages in Barton Lane that were built at the end of the 19th century to house armed guards who tried to end the smuggling that was so prevalent at the time.
