The town of Sturminster Newton in the beautiful county of Dorset grew from the bounty of the surrounding agricultural land here in the Blackmore Vale area. Located on the River Stour at a crossing point that is bridged by a six-arched 17th century bridge of medieval origin, Sturminster Newton is rich with history and heritage. Above the bridge are the remains of the 14th century Sturminster Newton Castle that stands on a crescent shaped mound thought to be the site of an Iron Age hill fort.
Sturminster Newton’s town centre reflects the prosperous periods of its history with 17th and 18th century thatched cottages, Georgian stone buildings and 19th century brick buildings adding to the charm. The market is held in the square every Monday and there are ample amenities and shops, pubs and eateries as well as a host of visitor and cultural attractions in the area, including; the Sturminster Newton Mill, restored to working order and with excellent exhibits and displays that tell the history of Sturminster and its people.
