The town of Whitchurch in Shropshire lies on the border with Wales and is known to be the longest, continuously inhabited town in Shropshire. A settlement here was founded by the Romans and its long history can best be explored at the fascinating Whitchurch Heritage Centre. The centre explores local history and people including exhibits focusing on Roman treasures, the musical knight, Sir Edward German who composed "Merrie England", the Victorian illustrator Randolph Caldecott and J.B.Joyce, the oldest clock makers in the world who were established in Whitchurch in 1690.
Whitchurch is a bustling market town with ample amenities, shops, eateries and pubs as well as visitor attractions and historic sites within the area. Walkers and outdoor enthusiasts visit to enjoy Jubilee Park and the five long distance walking routes that start here before journeying through Shropshire. The Shropshire Way is a particularly scenic walk that ventures along the beautiful Llangollen Canal. Whitchurch is home to attractive architecture as seen in the fine Queen Anne Church, St. Alkmund's. Beneath the church porch is where the heart of John Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury, is buried as per his dying request.
