The small town of Whyteleafe in the county of Surrey is thought to take its name from the white undersides of the leaves of the whitebeam tree that grows abundantly in the area and can be seen covering the slopes near the Whyteleafe Recreation Ground. The coming of the railways in 1856 brought growth and signs of prosperity, with the building of St Luke's Church in 1866 and the opening of Whyteleafe's second railway station in 1884. In 1869 a local entrepreneur decided to create a gasworks in the valley to supply gas to the growing community, selecting a position close to the railway, opposite a limeworks and near a stream. Old Barn Lane in the town was previously named Gasworks Lane. By the 1930’s, Whyteleafe was becoming populous with a boom in house building and major developments.
Whyteleafe today is still set amidst beautiful countryside with picturesque walks and the opportunity to enjoy outdoor pursuits and witness a variety of flora, fauna and wildlife. The town has a pub, shops and amenities as well as historic sites and visitor attractions in the surrounding area.
