The town of Yeovil is found in the county of Somerset, very close to the border with neighbouring county, Dorset. A thriving market town, it lies on the River Yeo from which it gets its name. Once a Roman settlement, it was during the Middle Ages that Yeovil established a market and its fortunes improved. Sadly, a series of fires between the 15th and 17th centuries, brought down the old town. Not much survived the fires and it is only the 14th century Church of St John the Baptist that remains.
Yeovil remains a country town at its heart, with a busy livestock market still a key event. However, with two theatres, several nightclubs, a variety of events throughout the year, a 10-screen cinema, choice of cuisines and even a bowling alley, Yeovil offers so much more than country pursuits. As if to illustrate the contrast, Yeovil boasts a modern pedestrian shopping precinct that houses both a major department store and a twice-weekly outdoor market.
The Yeovil Country Park is one of several open spaces that contribute to the attractiveness of the town.
