The pleasant, Georgian town of Witham is in the county of Essex, where the River Brain journeys to meet the River Blackwater nearby. The town is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 and where Chipping Hill is today, is where the ancient village was located, clustered around a triangular green. The manor of Witham was given to the Knights Templar in 1148 and was a coaching town, due to its strategic position on the London to Colchester road. Later prosperity came with cloth making and in the 18th century, a mineral bearing spring was discovered and for a while, the town became a fashionable spa.
Witham remains home to wonderful 16th century buildings, including the timber-framed Elements Bar and the Town Hall that was once the George Coaching Inn. With ample amenities, eateries, pubs and shopping as well as great golf, scenic walks and unforgettable cycling, Witham and the surrounding area offers the visitor a wealth of choice.
