The village of Armathwaite is in the picturesque county of Cumbria, with the River Eden flowing through it and much loved by anglers for its salmon fishing. Just outside the village are the remarkable carvings of faces and salmon; five of them carved into a sandstone cliff on the river. These interesting carvings are accompanied by an inscription, which consists of a quote from Isaac Walton's "Compleat Angler" and another far older inscription believed to be of Roman origin. The more recent inscription and carvings are thought to be the work of an eccentric local scholar, William Mounsey who was born in 1808.
Armathwaite is a peaceful village with some amenities, although these are plentiful in nearby, more developed towns. An ideal location for walkers, anglers, lovers of the countryside and those who enjoy outdoor pursuits, the village is home to a beautiful stretch of the River Eden; one of England’s finest salmon and trout rivers. Crossing the river is a sandstone bridge from where you catch sight of Armathwaite Castle; a four-storey fortified pele tower with a Georgian facade added later. There are lots of sites of interest, historic buildings and cultural attractions in the area for visitors to discover and enjoy.
