The town of Banchory in Aberdeenshire, Scotland is in a beautiful area where the Feugh River meets the River Dee, surrounded by forestry and agricultural land. Banchory started out as a Christian settlement founded by St Ternan who established a college on the banks of the River Dee to teach Christianity and farming to the local community of Picts. Two early Christian cross-slabs survive from this period, near the old churchyard on the site of the early church. The small town museum of Banchory is an excellent place to discover more about the history of the town and its people.
Banchory is the largest town in the area, offering ample amenities and within reach of other towns that offer additional choices for dining, shopping and leisure activities. The village and area draw visitors who come to explore the rich history of the region as well as the outstanding natural beauty of the diverse flora, fauna and wildlife. There are many wonderful walks to enjoy, particularly by and over the Bridge of Feugh, where you can see salmon leaping and take in the views as well as local attractions like nearby Scolty Tower. A trail leads up onto Scolty Hill where the tower stands as a monument to General Burnett who fought alongside Wellington; the spiral staircase inside leads up to the top of the tower and a tremendous, panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. Banchory is considered the ‘Gateway to Royal Deeside’ and has two famous castles nearby, Crathes and Drum.
