Barmouth is a town in the Welsh county of Gwynedd. It is situated on the estuary of the River Mawddach, where it joins the Cardigan Bay, and so has developed as a quietly popular seaside resort but is also a very historic settlement, with notable listed buildings that include the mediaeval Tŷ Gwyn tower house, the 19th century Tŷ Crwn roundhouse prison, and St John's Church. The new Lifeboat Visitors' Centre is also a popular attraction to the town, which has a gift shop and allows visitors the opportunity to see the RNLI lifeboat from the viewing gallery.
William Wordsworth spoke fondly of the town when visiting in the 19th century, as a place "With a fine sea view in front, the mountains behind, the glorious estuary running eight miles inland, and Cadair Idris within compass of a day's walk, Barmouth can always hold its own against any rival."
