The market town of Barnard Castle in County Durham was created from the community that grew up around the castle after which it was named. Although it is known as Bernard Balliol's castle, it was actually founded by the Normans shortly after the conquest. The peak of its importance though were when it was in the hands of Bernard de Bailliol during the latter half of the 12th century.
The town centre houses an octagonal Market cross that has served a number of uses in its time; serving as a place to sell dairy produce and as the town's lock up, Town Hall and Court House at different times in history. The Josephine and John Bowes Museum here is enjoyed for its elegance; built in the style of a French chateau and housing one of the country's finest art collections.
