Bedale is a market town in North Yorkshire, England, on the border of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It was listed in the Domesday Book as part of an area known as Hangshire due to the nearby Hang Bank in Finghall, a site where a number of gallows once stood for the execution marauding Scots. The land around Bedale is irrigated by Bedale Beck, which helped to establish the town's prominence in the agriculture inustry and related small trades. Surviving historical buildings of interest include an eighteenth century apothecary's store for leeches, a fourteenth century market cross and an underground ice house used for food preservation. Bedale also has numerous Georgian buildings, a small museum, and the "Big Sheep Little Cow Farm" is a very pleasant petting zoo for a family day out.
Bedale is very popular with walkers, owing to the many country routes, and with shoppers, as the town has a busy high street with many interesting local shops, traditional pubs, and eating places along its high street. There is also a busy market every Tuesday on the cobbled old market place. Bedale also has a leisure centre, gym, swimming pool, and astro-turf sports pitches. The Thorp Perrow Arboretum is also a very popular attraction to the town as an 85 acre woodland garden. It is said to have one of the finest collections of shrubs and trees in the United Kingdom.
