The town of Bruton in Somerset lies on the River Brue and is rich in the geology of the Middle Jurassic; considered to be one of the best places in the country to explore the stratigraphic distinction of ammonites in the subcontractus zone and the morrisi zone. The fascinating Bruton museum offers excellent insights with exhibits exploring the local area, the people and of course the Jurassic geology. The museum is found along the High Street in the Dovecote Building where the author John Steinbeck is also remembered as he spent time in Bruton. History is well preserved in the town’s buildings and churches too; including the medieval Packhorse Bridge, the Grade 1 listed 14th century Church of St. Mary and the Grade I listed Church of the Holy Trinity dating from 1623.
Bruton offers a good choice of amenities, eateries, shops and pubs as well as visitor attractions and historic sites within the area. Bruton’s location makes it a popular place for visitors who enjoy outdoor activities and there are many footpaths that weave their way through the town and the surrounding countryside. National footpaths pass by Bruton including the Leyland Trail and Macmillan Way.
