Burgh-By-Sands

Burgh-by-Sands is a village in the City of Carlisle district of the famous tourist region of Cumbria, in Northern-most England, directly on the Scottish Border.

This is a location that is rich in history and legend. Hadrian's Wall runs through the village, which was once was the Roman fort, Aballava. There are some who believe the village may have been the location of Avalon, the death place of King Arthur and the forge of the emblematic Excalibur. Whether this is true or not, we know that King Edward I certainly did die in the marshes near the town while on his way to war with the Scots. A grand 17th century monument marks the exact location, and forms a part of a popular walking route through the local area, which enjoys a scenic location near to the Solway Firth Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The village follows a traditional layout with simple amenities including a few convenience shops and a country pub. Most notably, the village centre features a statue of the fallen King Edward I. The church of St Michael, where the late King was laid until his removal to Westminster Abbey, was built with stone from the original Roman wall, and features a 14th century tower, and a large portion of the original Norman structure.
