The large Somerset village of Cheddar, at the foot of the picturesque Mendip Hills, is famous for strawberries, the wonderful caves, which are found in the mighty Cheddar Gorge and, of course… cheese. The magnificent Cheddar Gorge is the largest gorge in the United Kingdom and includes several show caves that bring explorers from across the globe.
There has been a human settlement here since Neolithic times and provides a unique geological and biological environment which has been recognised by the designation of several ‘Sites of Special Scientific Interest’. The village gave its name to Cheddar cheese and is now a major tourist destination with cultural and community attractions that include the Cheddar Show Caves Museum, the Market cross in Bath Street that dates from the 15th century and Hannah More's Cottage where Philanthropist educator Hannah More founded a school in the village in the late 18th century for the children of miners. The Grade II-listed building is used by the local community as a meeting place.
