Dartford is an English town situated in the north west of Kent, just 16 miles from London. The Dartford town is set very prettily in a valley of the River Darent, where it was once forded by the old Roman Road from London to Dover. This gave the town its name, which is derived from "Darent" and "ford". In the medieval period, Dartford grew as a market town. It now serves mostly as a commuter town serving Greater London. Archaeological discoveries in the area indicate that the site has been settled by humans since the Stone Age, more than 250,000 years ago. By the medieval period it became a rest point for pilgrims to Canterbury.
The River Darent is in itself a very popular attraction for visitors of the area taking advantage of the beautiful riverside walks, but other attractions of the area include the Deal and Dover castles and the Kent and East Sussex Steam Railway.
