The Boldons are actually a group of three small villages in County Durham, with East Boldon, West Boldon and Boldon Colliery making-up the group. When coal mining began in the 19th century, a colliery was developed at Boldon and in order to accommodate the miners, another village began to grow which became known as Boldon Colliery. Although the mine closed in 1983, the town continued to grow and provide employment.
The Boldons offer all the amenities you expect in a modern town, with a multi-screen cinema, plenty of eateries, pubs, outdoor spaces and a haunting. The Wheatsheaf Inn in West Boldon is reputed to be haunted and was the subject of the Discovery Channel programme. Several confirmed sightings at the Wheatsheaf Inn say that the ghosts are those of a young girl and her murderer.
