The large town of East Grinstead in the charming county of West Sussex is located at the meeting point of four counties; East Sussex, Kent, Surrey and West Sussex. The Domesday Book of 1086 records this as being a place of 12 settlements at a time when the area was primarily woods and forests. By the 13th century after the felling of the woods, the town developed and in 1564 it is reported that the community had a forge, leather dressing house, a slaughter house and a windmill as well as a weekly market. As people began to travel more, East Grinstead was a stopping point and in 1781 had 12 inns accommodating travellers between the south and London.
East Grinstead is a historic town that is beautifully maintained, participating in the South-East in Bloom competition and retaining many attractive, historic buildings; along the High Street is the longest continuous run of 14th century timber-framed buildings in England. There are lots of amenities, pubs, restaurants and shops and even with the passage of time and influx of modernity, a tobacconist and sweet shop from 1907, C. R. Wickendens is still trading.
