Ellesmere is a small market town neighbouring Oswestry, in north Shropshire, England. It is a popular tourist base due to its close proximity to several prominent glacial lakes, known as the Meres. The town overlooks the main one, 'The Mere', which is one of the largest natural meres in England, and is popular with birdwatchers. Ellesmere is the former location of the 11th century motte-and-bailey Ellesmere Castle. Only its earthworks survive, which now house a bowling green.
Attractions in the area include Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse, Chirk Castle, Erddig Hall, Gardens & Country Park, Cholmondeley Castle Gardens, Llangollen Motor Museum, and Valle Crucis Abbey, to name only a few.
