The pretty market town of Halesworth in the county of Suffolk is a town with a rich heritage built on the brewing, malting and agricultural industries of its past. St. Mary’s church here has been a part of town life since Saxon times and the Domesday Book makes mention of a priest ‘Ulf’, being in charge of the parish. The church you see today is built on the site of the earlier round-tower church, as evidenced by the carved Danestones. Thought to date from early Norman, their origins remain a mystery but they pre-date anything now visible at St. Mary’s today.
Halesworth mixes its history with its modern amenities and the original route through the town remains the primary Thoroughfare, offering a broad range of shops, eateries, pubs and pretty views from the nearby bridge. The Thoroughfare leads to the Market Place where you will find St. Mary’s Church. At the other end of Thoroughfare are the cultural attractions of the splendid library and The Cut Arts Centre that is housed in a converted Maltings. Halesworth’s railway station is also home to the Halesworth Museum.
