The small, friendly market town of Kirkby Stephens in the picturesque county of Cumbria, lies in the Upper Eden valley. The market that started here in 1361 is still held on Mondays in the Market Square, surrounded by an ancient collar of cobble-stones as well as buildings of historic significance. Visitors looking for historic sites will find the Cloisters, built in 1810 to provide shelter for churchgoers and just through the Cloisters is the Trupp Stone, where tithes were paid until 1836. At the edge of town is Croglam Castle, considered a fine example of pre-historic earthworks.
The town of Kirkby Stephen emanates from the Market Square, with narrow winding passageways leading off to other parts of the town and also to Frank's Bridge and the River Eden, where walkers and nature lovers find a perfect destination. This traditional town is a step back in time with cobbled yards, quaint corners and interesting shops as well as a stunning backdrop in the landscape of this part of Cumbria. There are ample amenities and shops as well as pubs and eateries.
