The town of Leatherhead in Surrey lies in the Mole Valley area, on the banks of the River Mole. Leatherhead grew from Saxon times as a result of its geography; at the centre of the county where ancient roads north to south and east to west met and a bridge crossed the river in the early medieval period. First foot-travellers then coaches stopped here on their journeys and even today, Leatherhead is at the heart of key routes with the M25 nearby. Much of the history of the town is evident in the architecture, despite a devastating fire in 1392; including the town’s Church of St. Mary and St. Nicholas that dates from around the 11th century. Leatherhead prospered and became a market town in 1248, serving as a centre for trade for the developing agricultural economy.
Leatherhead is surrounded by picturesque countryside and is the gateway to the beautiful Surrey Hills; designated as one of the country's most outstanding landscapes offering guided walks, stunning scenery, diverse flora, fauna and wildlife as well as historic houses. The area attracts walkers, bird-watchers, cyclists, riders and nature enthusiasts throughout the year. There are ample amenities and a good choice of shops, eateries and pubs in Leatherhead as well as historic site and visitor attractions throughout the area.
