The market town of Midhurst in the charming county of West Sussex lies on the River Rother and is probably best known for the ruins of the once magnificent Cowdray House. This was one of England's great Tudor houses, built in the 1520’s and visited by Henry VIII on three occasions during his reign. Cowdray was largely destroyed by fire on the 24th of September 1793 during restoration work. Although the fire started in the carpenters' workshop, legend tells of a dispossessed monk from Battle having put a curse on the house and family. Less than two weeks after the fire, a member of the family that owned Cowdray perished whilst trying to ride the Rhine Falls.
Midhurst is considered to be one of the loveliest towns in the country and visitors flock here in the summer to enjoy the polo season that brings with it a vibrant atmosphere and lots to see, do and enjoy. The main street is alongside the town’s square that offers excellent amenities, shops, eateries and pubs. Midhurst also has other historic sites of interest including atop St. Ann's Hill, the site of Midhurst Castle that stood from Norman times until the middle ages. The remains of the castle can be explored and the views are well worth the time.
