Mitcham falls within the county of Surrey as well as being a district in South London and it is through here that the River Wandle passes. In Mitcham, Morden and Merton, the river flows through a nature reserve and parkland. This busy built-up area where Outer and Inner London meet, has beautiful contrasts as industry lies alongside nature. It is the river that brought industryhere, with its watermills for grinding corn, snuff, wood and gunpowder and later, the mills used in the copper, leather, iron, wool, calico cloth and other trades. William Morris opened a factory on the River Wandle at Merton Abbey, that is now the Merton Abbey Mills Craft Village and all along the river, as the old trades have gone, modern industrial estates have replaced them.
As a district of London, there is abundance of choice for shopping, restaurants, pubs, bars and cultural attractions as well as impressive historic buildings, both here and in the surrounding areas. Nearby too though are places of natural beauty with flora, fauna and wildlife to explore; like the many trails along the banks of the River Wandle and the open spaces of Mitcham Common.
