Nicholforest is an extremely rural and sparsely populated community rather than a village, with a population of only 400 people. It is situated on the English and Scottish Border, the boundary of which is marked by the River Liddell, which is an excellent sea trout river popular for fishing and various other country pastimes. This is a rolling and partly wooded landscape admired for its fantastic views towards the Solway in the west, Scotland to the north, the Brampton Fells in the south, all of which are renowned for their outstanding natural beauty.
There are a number of self-catering holiday cottages in the area in addition to some very reputable bed & breakfast holiday accommodation providers in the hamlets of Catlowdy, Warwicksland, and Kershopefoot. The "Bridge Inn" is a popular traditional public house located in the west of Nicolforest, where visitors will also find a garage, if needed. There are several crossings into Scotland from Nicholforest, the most popular being a scenic route that passes through a dreamlike scenery of river gorges and waterfalls before reaching the town of Newcastleton in Scotland, which provides a good selection of shops, pubs and restaurants at which to enjoy a pleasant daytrip.
