The town of Peterhead in Aberdeenshire, Scotland lies at the easternmost point of mainland Scotland, to the north of the beautiful granite city of Aberdeen in an area offering majestic views and wonderful natural scenery. The geographic location means that throughout much of the year, Peterhead is in daylight. Fishing has always been important to the town and Peterhead was founded by fishermen. Peterhead's first harbour, Port Henry was constructed in 1593 and led to the growth of Peterhead as a fishing port. It is in Peterhead that one of Scotland’s toughest prisons was established in 1888 and here too that the building of the St. Fergus gas terminal led to the town becoming a major oil industry service centre in the 1970’s. It is fishing though that has been the constant, with many thousands of tonnes of fish landed at Peterhead still and hundreds of fishermen still based here.
Peterhead offers plenty of amenities, eateries, pubs and shops and is a very popular destination for visitors who enjoy walking, cycling, climbing, fishing and riding. Golf too is well catered for in the area with Peterhead, Cruden Bay and Longside courses choose from. Outdoor enthusiasts are spoilt for choice with nature reserves and diverse landscapes including dramatic cliffs, dense woodland, dunes, award winning beaches and the vast North Sea with whales, seals and dolphins to observe.
