A ‘new town’, Peterlee in County Durham was named after a man whose vision it was to see a better way of life for the residents in the villages of County Durham. Peterlee was designation on 10 March, 1948 and has grown into a thriving community. Originally the town was home to coal miners who worked the local mines and is unique, in that its creation was requested by the people through their MP.
The town has continued to see growth and considerable change in the last few years, with a major town centre redevelopment. With good planning, amenities and large, open, green spaces, Peterlee is an easy place to enjoy. As well as the various parks and leisure facilities, you will also find the wonderful Castle Eden Dene national nature reserve. Around the first weekend in September each year, Peterlee holds a two day event called the Peterlee Show at the Helford Road Cricket Ground, near the Pasmore Pavilion.
