Pickering is an ancient market town in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire, in England, bordering the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Overlooking the Vale of Pickering — a former glacial lake — the town and its neighbours are a very popular holiday destination owing to the spectacular landscape and rich history of the area. In addition to a wealth of more relaxed walking routes, the long-distance footpath the "Yorkshire Wolds Way", begins at neighbouring Hessle, while the "Cleveland Way" starts at Helmsley, passing through the North Yorkshire Moors National Park
It is said that the town was founded by King Peredurus in circa 270BC. The current town is of medieval origin, but the area is known to have been continually inhabited since the Mesolithic era, so there is certainly the possibility of this being the case. The area would have been a resource rich location for a settlement since the wake of the last ice age, from which the surrounding landscape was formed.
The convenient location, amenities and good transport routes of Pickering combine to make the town an excellent vantage point from which to enjoy the best of the North Yorkshire region. Pickering Castle, the steam and diesel powered North Yorkshire Moors Railway heritage line, and Dalby Forest are just a few of the attractions of the immediate area, with York Minster, Flamingo Land Theme Park & Zoo, and Castle Howard, being among the many others within easy reach.
