Portland lies across a causeway as a limestone tied island to the south of the resort town of Weymouth in the beautiful county of Dorset. Portland is connected to the mainland by Chesil Beach in a location that has a rich maritime heritage. Quarrying has long been an important industry here too with Portland Stone used in the construction of many well known buildings all over the world including; St Paul's Cathedral in London and the United Nation Headquarters in New York. From the 19th century until recently, Portland was home to an important naval base and is one of the largest man-made harbours in the world with huge breakwaters. This harbour has played prominent roles in World War I and World War II although today, it is a picturesque civilian port and place of leisure activities.
Portland is popular with visitors who enjoy outdoor pursuits as it is on the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, rich in diverse geology, wildlife, flora and fauna and perfect for walking and exploring. There is a famous lighthouse, ample amenities, sporting activities, shops, eateries and pubs here as well as across the causeway into Weymouth; and an abundance of historic sites, places of interest, visitor and cultural attractions in the area.
