Rugby is a market town in the county of Warwickshire and is credited with being the birthplace of rugby football. This once small, Anglo-Saxon farming settlement obtained a charter to hold a market in 1255 and went on to become a thriving market town. The famous association with rugby football came about when the inventor of the game, William Webb Ellis was busy breaking the existing rules at a football match played in 1823 at Rugby School; history was made and eventually spread across the world.
Today, Rugby is a busy place with a bustling town centre comprised of mostly Victorian and early 20th century buildings with less of the more historic structures in evidence now. With numerous restaurants offering all types of cuisine, vast numbers of friendly pubs and good selection for shoppers, Rugby is great for pleasure and for business.
