The large town of Tiverton in the attractive county of Devon lies on the Rivers Exe and Lowman; the sources of prosperity here as it was the rivers that powered the woollen industry on which the town grew and developed. Tiverton’s wool trade during the 16th and 17th centuries helped build much of the town’s heritage including the chapel of St. Peter's Parish Church, the small chapel and almshouses in Gold Street as well as the local school that was founded in 1604 and later relocated. Cotton imports and industrialisation brought an end to the woollen industry although the town’s lace making continues as it has since 1816 at the Heathcoat Lace Factory. The Tiverton Museum is the best place to start if you would like to discover more about the past here, with exhibits and displays.
Tiverton has all the amenities, shops, eateries and pubs you could want to choose from as well as some exceptional walks, visitor and cultural attractions and historic sites. The nearby Grand Western Canal offers wonderful trails taking in varied flora, fauna and wildlife as well as pretty canal barge journeys whilst the many historic houses and gardens of Tiverton and the surrounding area offer a wealth of discovery and adventure of their own.
