Waltham Abbey is a moderately sized market town in the south west of the county of Essex, with good commuter links to the City of London. It is prettily situated between the River Lea and the historic Epping Forest; and is named after the Abbey Church of Waltham Holy Cross, which resided over the town since its early history.
The town is bounded by meadows and marshland by the lowlands of the river, making it a very popular visiting place among nature lovers and walkers. However, Waltham Abbey is best known for the abbey of the same name, which is known to have been a place of worship since at least 1030 AD, with close historical ties to King Harold II, whose tomb survives here; the Battle of Hastings; Henry II; and Thomas Tallis, who was the last organist to play at the Abbey, before its dissolution in 1540. Waltham Abbey was the last in the country to be dissolved. Although much of the structure was subsequently demolished, much of it does remain, including the impressive Norman nave, which has since been refurbished to demonstrate its original grandeur, and the 14th century Lady Chapel.
