Known as the home of British rock climbing, Wasdale is the sublimely picturesque valley of the River Irt, which is located at the western end of England's Lake District National Park in Cumbria. The deepest lake in England — the Wastwater — occupies a large proportion of the valley floor, which at 3 miles long, 0.3 miles wide and 258 feet deep, affords an impressive vista of an other-worldly nature, with its fringe of steep-sided mountains, particularly those of Whin Rigg and Illgill Head on the south-eastern side of the lake, although the incline is much gentler to the north.
The head of the Wasdale, where visitors will find the village of Wasdale Head, is occupied by the Great Gable mountains, including Scafell Pike — the highest mountain in England. The popular tourist villages of Nether Wasdale and Gosforth are also located in the Wasdale, along with a large number of local attractions and places of interest.
