The town of Welshpool in Powys, Wales lies close to the border with England and is on the River Severn in the picturesque Severn Valley region of diverse landscapes and scenery. Welshpool is home to the magnificent medieval Powis Castle, known for its extensive formal gardens, terraces, parkland, deer park and landscaped estate that is cared for by the National Trust. It is considered one of the country’s best preserved castles and little has changed externally since the early Middle Ages; unlike most of the castles in the area, Powis Castle was not built to by the English to dominate the Welsh but was the fortress of Welsh princes. Four years after Edward I’s conquest of Wales, the last hereditary prince of Powis renounced his royal claim. Welshpool grew to become a thriving and successful market town and is still home to the largest sheep market in Europe.
Welshpool offers ample amenities, shops, eateries and pubs along with a rich heritage evident in the Georgian architecture, listed buildings and local historic sites. Welshpool’s location surrounds it with the rolling hills of Montgomeryshire and glorious unspoilt countryside providing plenty to see, do and enjoy including; walking trails, fishing and golf, wonderful scenery, attractive gardens and attractions.
