The historic market town of Wymondham in the diverse county of Norfolk proudly retains its Market Cross at its centre, as it has been since 1617. Wymondham has long been settled and the magnificent Abbey indicates a considerable settlement around the time it was founded in 1107. There was a terrible fire in 1615 that tore through two areas in the town, including the Market Place. Many buildings were lost, though some survived and exist today including; the Green Dragon pub and many of the 15th century houses in Damgate Street. Rebuilding began soon after and the new Market Cross was one of the first things in place. Wealth here was created from the wool trade and the making of small wooden objects; that continues today and is seen depicted in the Wymondham town sign.
Wymondham has shops, eateries, pubs and amenities as well as historic buildings, cultural attractions and places of interest. Wymondham railway station is home to museum that tells the story of the town. The award winning station was built in 1845 on the Norwich to Ely line and has a gift shop, tea room and a restaurant themed on "Brief Encounter" - complete with stations master’s lounge.
